Periphylla periphylla - Deepwater Jellyfish
This picture was taken at night in a Norwegian Fjord called (Trondheimsfjord). Diver rarely encounter these jellyfish as they are a deep water species.
Periphylla periphylla is mainly found in depths from about 1000 meters down to 7000 meters. However during the night Periphylla migrates from between 60 and 200 meters they have been recorded in depths of only 2 meters.
The main body of the Periphylla periphylla jellyfish can grown to 35cm with 12 tentacles growing to 50cm in length. The Norwegian name for this jellyfish is kronemanet.
The color varies from pale pink or orange to dark red.
Very strange looking scientists believe they are long-lived (30 yrs!)
Eggs are released in deep water and the embryo is gradually developed in the deep water without feeding for several months.
Don't know whether they can sting people as we didn't poke it too much!
