JELLYFISH INFORMATION

Jellyfish are fascinating creatures and there is a lot of interesting jellyfish facts. Did you for example know that jellyfish in some countries, including Japan, are considered a delicacy?

CHRYSAORA - COMPASS JELLYFISH

 

Chrysaora - Compass Jellyfish

The principal species of this jellyfish is Chrysaora hysoscella, also often called the compass jellyfish.

 

The bell-shaped body of this variety is roughly hemispherical and smooth and measures as much as 200 mm (8 inches) in diameter.

 

Sixteen brown, V-shaped radial markings point to the centre of the bell, typically against a background of cream to yellowish brown.

 

Widespread, especially round UK coasts in mid to late summer.

 

Although its got relatively short tentacles this one has rather nasty stings and can leave long lasting weeping sores.
